(International)–Finally, a global coalition is working to eliminate preventable blindness around the world by the year 2020. The group, made up of 26 international agencies, includes Christian Blind Mission International. CBMI’s President, Alan Harkey explains the urgency of their undertaking. “For over 90 years, Christian Blind Mission has turned back the darkness for people suffering from treatable eye diseases. 80-percent of all blindness can be prevented. Every minute, one child somewhere, goes blind.” Harkey says they are working to focus attention on the problem of physical and spiritual blindness. “October 11th is World Sight Day, a special day of hope and healing for children facing the scourge of blindness. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” CBMI’s work not only focuses on healing and preventing blindness, but also on the education and vocational training of blind people and their integration into society.”
