Gaining a greater understanding of the plight of refugees.

By November 10, 2006

Uganda/Kenya (MNN) — The life of a refugee is filled with difficulties and challenges. The Christian Reformed World Relief Committee is committed to serving the needs of refugees in settlements and transit camps in Africa.

The CRWRC is also actively involved in assisting refugees through their resettlement program in Canada. It’s because of their involvement in these two sides of the process that the CRWRC is planning to link one with the other in a very special way.

Next spring, March 11-24, 2007, the CRWRC is planning to send a group of North Americans to Uganda and Kenya to learn firsthand what a refugee faces. The purpose of the trip is to bring greater understanding to refugee sponsorship and advocacy work.

CRWRC’s Refugee Coordinator Rose Dekker says, for those who are part of the trip, “We hope this will deepen their understanding of refugee issues and strengthen the effectiveness of our resettlement program in Canada.”

The trip will include visits to refugee camps in Uganda and Kenya, meetings with the Ugandan Ministry of Internal Security, visits with the United Nations High Commission on Refugees, and other first-hand encounters with refugees and government programs that support them.

Cost and other information about the Refugee Camp Learning Tour are listed on the CRWRC website. Contact the CRWRC for more information.
