Indonesia Evangelist jailed for defaming Islam.

By May 8, 2006

Indonesia (MNN)–An evangelist affiliated with an Indonesian Pentecostal church (Gereja Sidang Jemaat Pentakosta (GSJP)), is awaiting trial at the Tasikmalaya Provincial Court, in Central Java.

Open Doors with Brother Andrew reports that at first, he was charged with doing a ‘displeasing act’, but local prosecutors then charged 55-year old Abe (name changed for security reasons) with ‘defaming Islam’. That’s a charge that carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail.

His arrest came two months ago, after an angry Muslim mob beat him because of his ministry.

Since then, members of the Indonesian Council of Clerics (MUI) have been trying to convince him to return to Islam. They promised freedom if he decides to return to Islam, but Abe has stayed strong to his faith.

Pray for his continued strength both physically and spiritually inside the prison. Pray for Abe’s trial to be fair, without any pressures from Muslim radicals.
