Bible school students killed in Indonesia

By May 15, 2006

Indonesia (MNN) — Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told an Islamic congregation that Muslim nations should oppose terrorism. The world’s most populous Muslim nation hosted a summit involving leaders of eight large Muslim countries over the weekend in Bali.

While this appears to be a step in the right direction, Christians continue to be the focus of violence. Teen Missions International’s Bob Bland says despite the violence, God is doing a great work in Indonesia. “Teen Missions International has five Bible schools in Indonesia. They are reaching out to a great number of people. In fact, we cooperate with Child Evangelism Fellowship in running Good News Clubs. And, we are running 297 Good News Clubs.”

That doesn’t mean students involved with the Bible Missionary Work Training Center don’t face hardships and threats. Bland says one of their teams paid the ultimate price. “They were traveling from where our Bible school is on one of the islands to another place to share the Gospel and on the way there they passed by a village that was militant Muslims and they took off after them with a speed boat and chased them and then opened up with automatic weapons — they killed — five people were shot.”

The was one young girl who survived. “Her life’s verse is for me to live is Christ, but to die is gain.”

Despite the attack, Bland says, “The work has not stopped. The work continues. Christians in Indonesia are working under that threat quite often. But, they seem to be going well and reaching out and in fact we actually see the work growing there.”

Bland is asking people to pray for students attending their Bibles schools. He says they’re strategic. “They can go from country to country with just a passport. They don’t even need a visa. These people can go into Burma, they can go to Laos and Vietnam and that’s just a terrific opportunity to spread the Gospel.”

Funding is needed to help this ministry expand, especially as the dollars continues losing its value overseas.
